D. What’s the Rush? (Slow Down)

Between time changes, long flights, and a drive from the airport, you are tired. The grocery store run before you get on the island is just the cherry on top of a hectic day. One of our first times down, we had a 4-hour flight, 2-hour time change, and 2- hour drive from the airport. The grocery story was closing soon and I was racing around trying to get in and out, anxious to get this necessary errand checked off the list prior to arriving at our final destination. I nearly ran some poor guy over coming down one of the isles and he looked at me and kindly said, “What’s the rush? … We are on Island Time.” Now, normally, I would get a bit prickly under the stress but I stopped and thought, “you know…this guy is right”. Even though the store was about to close, I needed to slow my roll and breathe. My natural inclination to get things done at a record pace was about to get a dose of cold water and I was becoming ok with that.

Have you noticed that the faster you move, the more uptight you become? What are some ways you can “slow your roll”? How does slowing your pace impact your relationship with God?

“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” James 5: 7-8
