Taking time to "Delight"

Do you take time to truly “delight” in the Lord and the people around you?

I had the privilege of spending some one-on-one time with my son this past week and it was delightful. I think it’s the first time we have really had this opportunity for just the two of us to hang out together for any substantial length of time. It only took 24 years!

We had a lot to get done and it was exhausting, but we still had a lot of fun. It was a “delight”. The only downside was having to leave but then I got to see my other adult child and delight in her.

The whole experience this week makes me think that this feeling of “delight” is how God wants me to feel about him all the time. To be grateful and really enjoy His presence no matter how my time is being spent. And not just on special occasions, either.

When I delight in God, it delights Him. It’s a gift that I can give the Lord when I recognize and enjoy his presence in my life, regardless of the difficulties at the time.

I want to give a shout out to all the mothers out there today on Mother’s Day. Being a mother has been such a blessing to my life and I cherish it. However, I know that Mother’s Day can be a difficult day for a number of reasons. The good news is that no matter our history or feelings about this particular day, we can still delight in the Lord. And that goes for every other day too.

Do you find it difficult to delight in spending time with the Lord? How about other people?

Do you think you have to be doing something fun in order to delight in the time you spend with someone? Why or why not?

What other feelings can get in the way of feeling delight?

Scripture

"The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4 (ESV)

"Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips with praise you." Psalm 63:3 (ESV)

"For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name." Psalm 33:21 (ESV)

"For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation."

Psalm 149:4 (ESV)
