Weekly Reflection – Failure isn’t an option

Everyone has secret agreements they make with themselves.

One that comes to mind for me is “failure isn’t an option.” At first glance, agreements like these seem pretty black and white – “Don’t Fail.” However, when we dig a little deeper, we discover that we are far off base. In this case, failure is a pretty ambiguous term. A failure to one person could be considered success for someone else.

I had a friend back in high school that got grounded for a C in chemistry. I thought that was nuts, considering I was too intimidated to even take chemistry. Now, her dad was a surgeon and she eventually became a doctor, so maybe her parents had a point. You get my drift. I may tell myself that “failure isn’t an option” but can’t even define what that specific failure really entails. So, what can we define?

What about sin? Sin is anything that separates us from God. We know from scriptures that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. And if we say we don’t sin, the truth isn’t in us. Sin has a clear definition and has an eternal impact. What would happen if we ignored our internal agreements regarding ourselves and focused instead on what God has to say? What if we became more aware of what could be separating ourselves from God’s best for our life? If we can define it, we have the option of turning away from it and back to God. What sin do you need to turn away from?

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3: 23

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1: 8
