Weekly Reflection – Funk

I was in a little bit of a funk the other day.

I was frustrated about some external circumstances outside of my control. I went for a walk and there was a lot of unpleasant ranting going on inside my head. Some negative self-talk and frustration toward others and it was building. I knew I needed to reverse my mental course, but wasn’t sure how to do that. I started to pray about it and began to recite some of the qualities of God. Qualities that are in His nature. Omnipresent, Omniscience, Omnipotent, Forgiving, Loving, Faithful, and so on.

The unconditional-ness of his qualities astounds and overwhelms the soul. I then started thinking that I needed a “go to” song when I was in these temporary befuddled states. The song, “Fully Known” popped in my head and I played it on my cell phone while I walked. The next song that came on after it was one by Matthew West that I hadn’t heard before. It was called, “Truth Be Told” and it reminded me how much of ourselves stays hidden inside. I went about the rest of my day having my attitude gradually improving until things got back to “normal”. What seemed disastrous at the time was just a momentary blip.

I realized we have a choice in how we respond to outside forces. We can seek God and get back on track or we can sulk and rehearse negative self-talk and false beliefs. The road back to normal can be quick or it can be long and painful. Which does it tend to be for you in times of frustration? What scripture would be your “go to” salve for your soul? What would be your “go to” worship song? Let me know because I need to make a list!
