Weekly Reflection – Hidy Hole

When I was a kid, hiding was a favorite pastime.

Things like “hide and seek”, fort building out of sofa cushions, or hanging out in a tucked away corner of the closet. As an adult, the draw to isolate can still be pretty darn tempting, but typically for different reasons. As a kid, you are exploring independence but as an adult you are trying to find a way to escape.

Any number of things can pull us toward our little “hidy hole”; whether it is insecurity, fear of rejection, frustration, pride, sadness, stress, busyness, fatigue, confusion, or being criticized just to name a few. After turning to isolation as a temporary fix to curb our senses, it isn’t long before we feel the loneliness creeping in and we desire to be truly seen and known again. It ends up being a yo-yo effect of seeking relationships and then pulling away when things get uncomfortable.

What would happen if we focused on seeking time with God and His wisdom during these episodes of worldly withdrawal? What if we concentrated on things that are from above (Colossians 3:12-17) rather than earthly things, how would that change your perspective?

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossian 3:2-3
