It was 4am and my husband and I, along with our labradoodle,...
...were sitting in our car in front of our daughter’s house in Fort Collins, Colorado. We waited patiently as the sun came up and until we saw signs of activity from inside the house. It was July 3, 2018 and it was the beginning of an unplanned adventure of living out of a suitcase for nearly 5 months. We had an issue with our house in the middle of the night and we elected to live elsewhere until it was resolved.
First, we lived in our daughter’s basement for a short period of time, then spent a week at a retreat ministry, several weeks at an Airbnb, a week and a half in Arkansas, back to an Airbnb, a week and a half in Indiana, back to an Airbnb. You get the idea.
My husband worked feverishly with different friends and relatives to come up with short term options. I was a bit numb to be perfectly honest and didn’t have a lot to offer. However, my husband is great in these kinds of situations. He worked tirelessly to find housing options and we were able to see how God provided the next place to stay at just the right moment every time. Would I want to be back in that position again? Not really, but we learned a lot and it has helped us be flexible and open to other detours and changes in life since then.
You just don’t know how you are going to respond to a challenge until you are in it. I actually enjoyed getting to spend time with our kids, friends, and other family members. I learned to let go of the things I couldn’t control. I became less attached to a home and the stuff that goes with it and found freedom in being released from it. You can’t see how God provides and teaches us in all our circumstances until you are tested. The good thing is God is ever present and provides what you need in just the right timing. Do you believe it? Can you be content in your current circumstances? Do you trust God to show you the next right step?
“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 19
