I went to one of those vintage markets yesterday.

The kind where there are vendor booths with completely random items. As I meandered through the store, it was like I stepped back into time. Things like vintage Corningware, (the white one with the blue flower in the middle), lanterns, and repurposed farm equipment. I was most tempted by the old Tupperware because there were some cups just like the ones I had as a kid. I guess that stuff really is indestructible. My heart skipped a bit when I saw the Little Golden Book classic, “The Poky Little Puppy”. For some reason, that was my favorite book as a kid. The Poky Little Puppy was quite the rebel, digging under fences, exploring, and losing track of time. It is funny what random things can do to shake up your memories.

It made me think about what items around my house today might withstand the test of time and even if they do, which of those have real “value”. I mean...I have a T-shirt from 1988, and well past it’s prime. I have wedding gifts and kitchenware that are 30 years old, much of which I rarely use. I have two oil lanterns passed down from my grandparents that have never been lit.

I am reminded of Matthew 6: 19-24, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Looking around your house today, what physical “treasures” do you imagine may withstand the test of time? How does that compare to the treasures in heaven? Are you laying up more treasures on earth or in heaven?
